What causes an engine light code saying the transmission relay switch is stuck in the off position? It also locks the transmission into 2nd gear. I replaced the relay and cleared the code. If it does come back again, I would like to know what could be causing it? thank you

Hello,

Can I ask which code number it is? The transmission control relay is located inside the TIPM which can go out, so this might be the problem. I would swap out the relay, here is the location so you can check it out. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.

yes it was PO888, swap out worked, and I cleared code. I did not drive far but the engine light did not come back on and is not stuck in 2nd gear anymore. also noticed transmission fluid was down 3/4 of a quart so i put that in. (It said good for replacing Dextron II or III and works in some fords 96and up, and for dodge pre 06.? never heard of this kind?) Anyway, did not notice any fluid on the driveway. If it trips into the trans relay stuck in the off again code what should i check next that might be causing it?

It looks like you fixed the problem, if the problem comes back let me know and we can start checking the electrical system.

P0888 - TCM Power Relay Sense Circuit Open

You may have a bad TCM, but we will cross that bridge when we get to it.

looks like i've come to that bridge to cross. The problem came back and I took the truck to Tip Top Transmission shop. After checking everything they could they said it must be the TCM. Here's the problem, Dodge has discontinued making them and the shop called and said they can't locate one at the dealer and are having a hard time locating a remanufactured one anywhere. The truck has been down there 2 weeks now and they say they are still trying to find one. Do I now own an unrepairable truck?

Transmission shop called to tell me the TCM i need for my 2005 Dodge Dakota is no longer being made and they can't find another or a remanufactured one anywhere. They said they will keep trying but it's been almost 2 weeks now. Is my truck unrepairable now?

Never did find one and it's just to risky for me to buy one from someone on e-bay or anyone on line not knowing what shape its going to be in. My mechanic at Tip Top Transmissions feels same way. But he did open the TCM himself and found some wires that needed soldering and its been a couple weeks now with no codes popping up. He also showed me the wiring diagram and told me it is possible but expensive to bypass the whole thing. I don't think I would ever do that but I know one thing...I will never buy another Dodge for the rest of my life. Thank you for your time and for all the people you help. Hope it continues. I'm sure i will be back again. Be safe.
