Alright so I bought a the car listed above it is a GT. About three weeks ago the guy said the overdrive solenoid are bad. But drives fine with overdrive off. So I do that. I can shift into first and second fine but it will not go into third unless I turn over drive off then it acts like its in neutral. It revs up a little bit then I turn it back off then it shifts into third but after a little bit the engine starts to over heat. I replaced the whole distributor. Still does it. Also, I do not know much about cars.

The distributor has nothing to do with the transmission.

When a seller says, "all it needs is", you can be sure it does not. If it was that simple, he would have fixed it so he could get more dollars for the car, or he would keep on driving it. It is common to downplay what is really needed so they an unload the car more easily. You need a professional diagnosis from a transmission specialty shop.
