Try to start the car after sitting for over a week and it would not start on the first attempt. On second attempt it started. I went somewhere where I had to wait and the car idled for some time. I turned the car off and it set there for about 15 minutes. I started the car to cool off and it idled for about 10 minutes, I turned it back off and it set there for about 15 minutes. I started the car to cool off and it idled for about 10 minutes, I turned it back off and it set there for about 15 minutes. I started the car to cool off and soon after the traction light came on and a little while later the theft light came on. I turned the car off and the key would not turn all the way to off. I drove the car home and went on to the internet and I found a posting that said to key the key out I would have to reset the system. I turned the key to aux, removed the ECM fuse and then the theft fuse, waited about a minute, replaced the ECM fuse and then the theft fuse, cranked the car, let it idle for about 30 seconds, turned the car off and the key came out and the lights went out. After restarting the car about 30 seconds later the same lights came on. Help!

When you say the engine will not start, do you mean the engine not crank over (starter) or the engine cranks but does not run? Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can see what's going on? That would be great. You can upload it here with your response. If the engine will not crank over these cars had a problem with the shift linkage which will cause both issues. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Ken,

Thanks for replying. After exhaustive research I have found several posts on other websites that imply and show the problem as an ECM problem. They say that when the traction and theft lights are on it has something to do with partial failure of the ECM unit. Total failure would result in the car not starting at all. I am going to order a reprogrammed ECM and go from there. I will update when I complete the fix.

Sounds good, here are the instruction on how to replace the ECM in the diagrams below:

ENGINE CONTROL MODULE PROGRAMMING AND SETUP

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

ECM Replacement
If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed:
1. The ECM Reprogramming-Refer to Service Programming System (SPS).
2. The CKP System Variation Learn-Refer to CKP System Variation Learn Procedure.
3. Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was replaced.
4. Transmission Fluid Life Remaining-When available, use the scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was replaced.
5. Theft Deterrent-Refer to Programming Theft Deterrent System Components.

ECM Reprogramming
- If the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS).
- Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
- Transmission Fluid Life Remaining-When available, use the scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was replaced.

Setup for Component Replacement
The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

If any of the following components are replaced, a CKP System Variation Learn Procedure must be performed.
- Engine replacement
- Any engine repair that disturbs the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor or its relationship with the crankshaft reluctor wheel
- CKP sensor

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find.

That diagram reads that it is for a 2006 V8. I have the V6 3.6L. Will that make a difference on ECM location?
