My TPS went out so I brought a new one. How do I relearn it to work on my car?

Hello my name is Dave.

I just want to be clear that you replaced the the accelerator pedal? There is a relearn procedure however you would need a scanner to perform it so I would recommend checking with a local repair shop to perform the procedure. What are the symptoms you were experiencing before and after replacing the pedal? If you have replaced it and are not getting any throttle response I would expect it to throw a MIL (check engine light). If the light is on we should start with the code.

Here is our tutorial on retrieving codes:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

If you can retrieve any codes in the computer and let us know what you find we will be happy to guide you further. If there are no codes stored in the computer then the diagnostic procedure is going to be more involved and would require a scanner that has live data but let's start with the codes. Please keep us up to date on your progress and thank you for using 2CarPros!

Here you go my friend: Throttle/Idle Learn

The engine control learns the idle position of the throttle body for correct operation. When the throttle body or ECM is replaced, this procedure must be performed to ensure correct idle operation. The engine idle may be unstable or a DTC may set if the idle position has not been learned.

Perform the following procedure in order to allow the ECM to learn the idle position:

1. Ensure that the following conditions are met:
- The vehicle speed is 0 mph.
- The accelerator pedal angle is less than 14.9 percent.
- The battery voltage is more than 10 volts.
- The engine coolant temperature (ECT) is between 5-60°C (41-140°F).
- The intake air temperature (IAT) is more than 5-60°C (41-140°F).
2. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds.
3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF for 1 minute.
4. Turn OFF the ignition.
5. Clear DTCs as necessary.
