I have a '97 Toyota Tercel with 101,000 miles on it. The car runs great, except that when I use the fan (especially the A/C) it sometimes makes screeching sound. If I turn off the A/C it will usually go away immediately. Is it a loose belt?

Turn on the blower motor without the A/C to see if it the blower motor. If not it is either a loose belt or perhaps it may be a bad compressor or maybe an alternator bearing.

Feel the belt this goes around the compressor. If it has more tan 1/4" of slack it needs to be replaced . Once they start to squeal they need to be replaced
