I have a 1990 Toyota Tercel and when i turn it on to get it warmed up, the catalytic converter turns red, and its hot. what would the problem be?

Have the exhaust system check for restriction-
May be an exhaust leak before the catalityc converter, check for a cracked exhaust manifold.
There may be an engine problem causing it to run way too lean, possibly a misfire.
The engine may be running too rich and in combination with an exhaust leak cause combustion to take place in the exhaust pipe.
