Electrical problem
1992 Toyota Tacoma 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 220 k miles

Truck stalled after driving a while a couple of weeks ago, since then I've cleaned battery terminals and clamps, but the stalling [periodically and always after I've been driving a bit, i.e. when engine is warm] continues. I have always been able to restart by cranking again [sometimes several times] and the problem arises soon after I have had the engine off for a short period of time and at or near idle. I have checked the alternator [putting out max. charge] and battery and have replaced the positive cable clamp. When stalling occurs the check light on far right of dash display appears and instructs in manual to "see dealer electrical problem". Because of the periodic nature of problem [and when system is hot] I suspect that some sort of short/resistance is going on [in fuse box, coil?]. The idle speed seems okay [by ear] so I don't think thats it. Help, Bsmrt

Hi Bsmrt. Welcome to the forum. You're right to suspect an electrical problem, but not in the circuits you mentioned. You would have other symptoms such as slow wipers, dead radio, dim head lights, etc. Also, those circuits are affected very little by heat. It is more likely a sensor has become heat-sensitive and is failing when warm. In particular, look at the crankshaft position sensor. These are common failure items on every brand and model of car and truck.

I hate throwing parts at an intermittent problem, but you also have the advantage of having a diagnostic fault code memorized in the Engine Computer. That occurs when the Check Engine light turns on. Many auto parts stores can read the code(s) for you for free.
