2002 Toyota Solara smoking Manifold Oxygen Sensor!!!

smoke started to come out from the oxygen sensor that goes into manifold of a 2002 toyota solara v6, I know i need to change it just to be safe but why is the main reason? could it be a leak of some sort of gas? the smoke smelled like plastic though or burning oil!!! please help!!! why?[img:c598062f07]http://www.2carpros.com/forum/automotive_pictures/524944_11_1.jpg[/img:c598062f07]
