Electrical problem
2001 Toyota Sienna 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive 87,000 miles

My engine light has been on for some time. Testing has revealed that the 02 sensor (bank 1/sensor 1) needs to be replaced. I've had the vehicle at two different mechanics & they've been unable to remove the sensor in order to replace. They tell me nonreplacement will not affect my van performance or cause any damage. First, why can't this sensor be removed; second, will neglecting to replace the sensor cause any damage?

I have never heard of an oxygen sensor that can't be removed...that would be a useless design seeing as how all senors will fail eventually.. The only difference you will have with the oxygen sensor being faulty is poor fuel mileage and you will never pass emissions tests if you live in a state which requires that.

they are telling you it cant be replaced simply because they dont want to go through the work of removing and replacing it. it is very hard to get to and even harder to replace but it is possible.
