Hello,
We've had our RAV4 since Oct. of '06, and usually when we back out of the driveway and stop and put the car in D, there is a clunking noise from the rear of the car. It occurs after the car has sat overnight, and rarely does it after being driven around running errands, etc.

I've asked the dealer about it, they kept it overnight and found nothing wrong and suggested it is the rear brakes.

It sounds more harsh than just brakes, so I'd like a 2nd opinion.

Thanks,
Td

A close order inspection should be made on the driveline from point A to B -could be a universal joint/s , center bearing, excessive play on the output shaft.

I had the same problem with my 09 Rav4. I actually heard the clunk about a year before I addressed the issue. It was only every once in awhile at first but about a year later it started clunking Everytime I backed out of my driveway or returned to my driveway. It was my sway bar links, so my mechanic took the link out on my passenger back side and the noise stopped. I had all 4 sway bar links replaced and no more clunking.
