Our 98 RAV4 recentyly quit shifting into 5th gear. We were travelling at about 40mph when it popped out of gear. Now it won't engage in 5th gear.
The garage I took it to said it needed a whole new transmission. Over $2000!
My friend said it was more likely a linkage adjustment.

Can you please advise me on what steps I can take to determine which way to go. Thanks in advance.

Hi shadetree33tech,

The synchromesh rings and hub are worn. Best you can pray for is that there is a loose locknut inside which will solve the problem if it is retightened.

You don't need a new trans, just replacing the 5th gears set will do. Get a second opinion from someone who can do repairs on trans.
