2001 Toyota Previa Oil Light Stays On
The engine oil light is a DUH circuit comprised of a pressure switch that allows the light to come on if there is less than 7 lbs of oil pressure. The switch has a single wire with the switch usually located somewhere near the oil filter.
THERE IS NO RESET FOR THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT.
If your oil pressue had been 7 pounds or less you would be like the ad I saw in the paper the other day-"-For sale old ford truck, no motor but sure tows easy."
Locate the sensor remove the wire and turn the key on and see what the light does. Ground the wire and see what the light does. One of the two tests should put out the light. If the light goes out, replace the pressure switch.
Suggested Repair
There is no reset for the oil pressure light. Locate the single-wire oil pressure switch, usually near the oil filter. With the key on, disconnect the wire and note the light, then ground the wire and note the light. If the light goes out during one of those tests, replace the pressure switch.
Conversation Summary
A 2001 Toyota Previa owner changed the oil, but the oil light stayed on and asked how to reset it. Another user suggested disconnecting the battery, a bad sensor, or a free code check. The Toyota expert explained that the light is controlled by a pressure switch that comes on below about 7 psi, that there is no reset, and that the switch should be tested by disconnecting and grounding its wire. If the light goes out, the pressure switch should be replaced.
