I'm working on 1986 Toyota 4 runner pickup truck the transmission will not go into gear any thoughts? i thought maybe the shift linkage could you tell me how to check that?

Is it a manual or automatic???

it is a 5 speed manual tranny

Here is a test to conduct. With the car off and without the clutch depressed can you go through all the gears. If not then I would suspect the linkage needs adjusting or replacing. If you have problems going into gear with the car running then I would suspect the clutch is not disengaging completely.

it goes into all the gears freely without the clutch depressed thats why i suspect the linkage while its running or off it will move freely
