Cannot shift into 4th gear without grinding . Was told that sychro ring has either slipped out of postion or it just snapper and rotated out of position. Its a 2003 4x4 tacoma . I would like to have it repaired but need to know a ball park figure on cost. Mechanic that diagnosed the ring told me he couldn't give me estimate because he'd have to pull the transmission first? If I let him do that I believe he's got me then. Can you give me approx. cost?

well what i would do if i were you is call your local salvage yards and get a price on a used transmission. these transmissions are usually bullet proof so buying a used one is a very good option, then add 500 dollars on top of that cost and that is a pretty close estimate.
