Our Tacoma 3.4 has recently developed a sound similar to a wheel bearing that is going bad. This can be heard clearly at an idle behind the timing belt cover. The sound speeds up with engine RPM as well. Last night I noticed a oil leak on the driveway below the front of the motor. With a light, and small mirror I was only able to see that the oil is running from somewhere in or above the water pump area. Without removing the timing cover, I can't tell for sure.

Before I go and assume the worse, or the least, I thought I would ask here if anything like this may be a repeat offender to this particular motor that you have dealt with.

Thanks,
Craig

Hello Craig,

The noise you are hearing is a timing belt idler bearing or water pump bearing gone bad, the oil leak is probably coming from the camshaft oil seal. We have replaced these items in our shop. Please let me know what you find.
