1994 Toyota Pickup Speedometer

The Needle on my speedometer started jumping around and now does not work at all. Someone who I try not to get advise from told me that I have a busted speedometer cable. Another person told me that there is not a cable but a sensor. If it is a sensor, is there a way to check without taking it to the shop?
