When replacing the timing chain and gears do you put the dot on the cam gear at 12 o'clock or
the notch that fits on the cam dowel at 12 o'clock ? The manual says the notch but it runs rough and cannot get the timing to set at 5*.

Put the engine no.1 piston on its compression stroke/TDC then line all the markings up at the cam and crank sprockets
