Transmission problem

I'll start off by saying that I don't know much about cars. So bear with me.
My speedometer and odometer stopped working in my truck. I removed the speedo gear from the transmission and found it to have an hourglass shape. I replaced it and they still are not working. I then looked at the gear inside the transmission that the speedo gear turns against and it is moving and spinning loosely on the rod it is attached to.
Is there an easy fix for this problem or do you have to remove the drivetrain and transmission to get to it?
