I have a 1997 Toyota Tacoma, 4WD, Extra Cab, 4 Cyl, 2.7 Liter engine, 250,000 miles. The check engine light came on and indicated misfires on cylinder #2.

I tested the compression on the #2 cylinder and it was under 50, where the #1 was around 140.

1) What should my next step be?
2) It still runs ok, is it ok to drive?

Thanks!

The most common cause above all others in a 97-98 Toyoya is a clogged fuel injector. The input to the injector has a very fine filter. You can remove the injector rail, remove the injectors and clean the filter. On a truck with that many miles I would remove all of the filters. I have done it many times. It beats installing a new injector.

Make SURE you change the fuel filter! It is a bear to change but it is most likelt the cause of the clogged injector.
