car idlings up and when you put it in gear it kills

I need a little more info like carb or fuel injection and what country the car is being used.

If it is FI there is an Idle adjuster in the intake manifold that looks like a big screw. With that many miles It may be a vacuum hose or a very dirty throttle body, the most probable cause.
