1989 Other Toyota Repair Alternator

What would cause the alternator to quit working...I've replaced it 3 times. Would oil or power steering fluid short it out or could reverse polarity someplace be causing it?

The tappets make a clicking metallic noise when i am driving.
It's been doing it for a number of years. it also loses power.What can i do about it? I drive a toyota hiace
van 1985 model 2L engine automatic.
