1986 Toyota Highlander car shifted into neutral by itself

hi, i was driving up a mountain road at about 40 mph, and my car went into neutral on its own (i got rear ended) i looked down and the gearshift was in the N position! I am small and there is no way my knee or elbow can even reach the gearshift.

Maybe the shifters detent isnt strong enough to hold against the snap of being hit from behind.Itisnt uncommon for cars to pop out of gear when hit.The energy absorbed by the car is alot and can do odd things. Does the shifter work like it should? Does it feel the same as before?
