An evaporator core can go at any time. The expansion valve and reciever/dryer are usually common replacements after the ac system has been opened up to replace an evaporator or condensor coil. I don't know if you have a price quote yet, but I'm sure it will be high. I would sure shop around and get a second opinion. If they charged $400 to just replace or repair the fans, the cost of what they recomend, I would guess to be in the nieghborhood of $1200 or more. Over the years, the one thing I have learned as a consumer when it comes to AC, is never jump on the first estimate unless you really know and trust the person you're dealing with. Hope this helps. In ADDITION; your AC system may just need a recharge. Check it out.
