2000 Toyota Echo Fuel usage

Bought this car used in November 2008, it runs like a top but uses gas like it's a race car. A car of this type should be getting at least 20-25 miles to the gallon and I'm getting between 9 and 11. It doesn't matter what kind of gas I use the mileage hasn't improved.
Since November the oil has been changed twice, the air filter and plugs have changed and it's had a fuel injector purge.
When I go to put gas into I have to move the nozzle around until I find a spot that will allow the gas to flow into the tank. Otherwise the gas just comes right back out.
From trolling the web, I understand that there are a variety of reasons that a car is using too much gas. I'd just be happy to have some direction so I don't look like too much of an idiot when I take it to the repair shop.

i have same car with bad gas and i have 28 Mil per gallons , try to test and change fuel injector and oxgen sensor
