In the past few months the red brake light on the dash stays light. This is the same light which illuminates when the emergency/parking brake is applied.

What are some of the caused for this light being illuminated on a constant basis?

You are low on brake fluid. Check the level in the master cylinder and fill to full mark.

I assumed fluid level may be the culprit so I changed out the rear shoes to no avail. Tonight I will change out the badly worn front pads. This should push enough fluid back up into the resevoir to turn out the light. I will keep you informed, Again THank you.

Exactly. If the light is still on its because the float is hung up and all you have to do it lightly tap on the master cylinder and the light should go out.
