My Cressida has started to emit blue smoke after the engine is started and after awhile it isn't quite as noticeable until I step on the throttle, then a big cloud of blue smoke is rolling behind the car. Other then the burning oil issue, it runs perfect, no noticeable knocks, no loss of power, idles smooth and doesn't hesitate when the throttle is pushed down. There is a lil bit of blowby. It doesn't seem like a burnt valve, but I was thinking maybe the valve stem seals and/or piston rings. Any other thoughts of the possibility? I love the car and surely don't want to part with it, even if it means an $1800 rebuild, but don't want to go that far if it is not needed.

Hi there,

The smoke on start up will be valve stem seals, and the smoking on acceleration will most likely be a ring problem, as you have already seen, you have blow by issue so the rings will be suspect, do a leak down test as this will give you a better idea as to the extent of ring problems you have, but first impressions is a re ring at least.

I had similar issued with my '84, but they cleared up after replacing the valve stem seals. The original stem seals tend to harden and crack after awhile, so some oil burning and smoking is to be expected.
