I bought my car almost 3 yrs ago from the toyota dealer at 52,000 miles, and I haven't had a tune up done since Ive had the car. today after I drove it awhile the engine light came on & the idle is rough. why would the engine light come on? Tune up needed? If so can I drive the car a little before getting the tuneup? Because it is new year's eve noone will be able to look at it until saturday after new years day.

Take to some autoparts stores and have PCM scanned (free service) to retrieve codes.

There are some autoparts stores open today.

Check engine does not necessarily mean you need a tune, could be a sensor is out of range.
The only real tune up items are the plugs, air filter, oil change, but use ONLY Denso or NGK Iridium.
