2005 Toyota Corolla Check engine light cruise controll swit

Check engine light comes on, gas peddle is disabled, must shut car off, restart works ok for a while. Took the care too Auto zone or a free computer look up codes, they said its either a cruise controll switch open or short or a brake switch open or short. I believe its the cruise control switch as it is rarely used. When the problem first started happening, I turned the cruise control on, then after a while with it set, it just shuts off on its own.
Would this be something I could fix myself. I hate going too the Toyota dealer and have them charge me $120 just too put it on the computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
