The problem described here generally happens when the car gets to normal operating temperature, but can happen when the engine is colder. The engine has to be under load - when driving - and it seems to be OK when just revving the engine.

First problem.
From 4000 rpm upward, when accelerating, the engine seems to loose some power and starts to choke. It feels as if it either misfires or have a lack of gas. This happens most of the time, but sometimes the problem is not present. It also happens that the "choking" will start above 4000 rpm, but will suddenly disappear when going over 5000rpm. When stopping any acceleration and just having the engine run above 4000 rpm, it runs fine without choking.

Second problem.
Sometimes the engine will hesitate or choke for about a second or two when you suddenly accelerate. This happens under two conditions: 1) when there is a sudden change in the engine RPM e.g. when changing gears. E.g. shift to next gear, clutch is released, car is moving smoothly and then a push on the gas will cause this. Playing with the gas pedal after this occurrence, does not cause the problem again. 2) after cruising at a constant speed a few km, and there is a sudden push on the gas, the choking effect will happen again. This happens only when above 2000 rpm, regardless of the car speed.

The outside temperature has an influence on this too, whether it happens or not. below 0 Celsius, the problem never happens. Up to about 10 Celsius, it might happen, but above 10 Celsius I can repeat it continuously. The hotter it is outside, the more often the problem can be repeated..

The Toyota dealerships I've had the car to, have no clue because the engine's computer does not register any error codes whatsoever.

Another noticeable symptom, is a noise in the engine which the Toyota service tells me is just the cams. The noise started about 2 years after I had bought the car. Difficult noise to describe, but it sounds like a timing chain that is not "stable" or in the beginning it sounded like valves that are not adjusted properly. This noise happens when: 1) above 2000 rpm, 2) when the car is cruising at a constant speed and the gas paddle is depressed just slightly. Releasing the gas or pushing hard on the paddle, makes mostly disappear.

The noise started first, then later the choking when accelerating with the rpm above 4000, and later the choking when changing gears or after cruising for a bit at a constant speed. Something seems to deteriorate over time, with no registering of any error codes.

Other than that the engine performs fine, no oil usage, good gas millage, etc.
