2003 Toyota Corolla Engine Damage?

My mother in laws car started smoking and overheating so she pulled into a QT and checked the oil level but there wasnt any oil in the engine. so she replaced the engine oil but now when the car is running it sounds like a bunch of aluminum cans are rolling around under her hood. What could this noise be?

Bearing, camshaft, or lifter (or all) damage.

Change oil and look for metal in oil.
