A few months ago my Corolla began not shifting very well in cases like excellerating to get on the interstate and idled rough at traffic lights. I took it to Toyota and they told me there was no problem with it- So we had the gas flushed and put on a new Cannon Air Filter. I didn't notice much of a difference; maybe a little. Shortly after my check engine light came on. The code read for my O2 Sensor, so we replaced it. Then it came on again a couple of weeks later. This time it cam ewith a glugging at my first traffic light in the morning. It felt like the car was going to just shut off on me but it never did. The code read I think 171 or something-whichever it is that could be any sensor under the sun. After some studying, we decided it must be my Mass Air Flow Sensor so we cleaned it. The glugging stopped. And then the light came on about a week later with the same glugging at the same time in the morning. Cleaned it again. Same cycle. Finally we replaced it and several weeks have passed with no signs of a problem- until yesterday. The light came on and sure enough came the glugging the next morning at the same light. Now the code is saying my car is "running too lean". The car place said that by cleaning the part and unplugging the battary we are just masking a problem and resetting the light but I do't necessarly agree because the glugging stops when the light is not on. We just pulled out the Mass Air Flow Snesor and it's dirty again. Other than the glugging at the same place every morning, the car runs fine. It idles slightly rough and has a little trouble excellerating but I just don't feel like it's something major. Please help. What is making the sensor get so dirty? It that even the issue?

Mass Air Flow measures the volume of air entering the engine. This info is then interperted by the PCM to set fuel maps and ignition advance.

I think that the problem may be the air filter, not sure by what you mean "cannon" air filter. Are you talking about a K&N cone filter?

In any case the fact that the MAF is getting dirty is of concern, because it WILL affect the info sent to the PCM and will send incorrect data. Which in turn changes fuel mapping.

Change the filter to a factory one, clean the MAF, reset the code and see if that corrects the problem.

If not then post the problem to this thread, and we'll go from there.
