2003 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 88,000 miles

i have a 2003 toyota corolla with 88,000 miles. the check engine light came on. i took the car to a local mechanic and he stated that my catalytic converter has gone out. could this be a symptom of another problem within my engine?

there are hundreds of possibility's that the check engine light can mean, ask him what the trouble code is first, then you can start replacing.
