i was told by a mechanic that I need to replace my catalytic converter. What is the usual price for this, and how long does a converter usually last?

OEM are expensive @$700 to $1200. They will last car life unless an engine problem damages it. What is car doing to have you take to shop?

Have them perform a backpressure test on the convertor, this will give you difinitive evidence that the convertor is clogged.

Convertors fail, generally because of incorrect air/fuel mixture, or an impact to the convertor itself (rock, curb)

But I agree with Doc, have the codes read, if you have a rich mixture, then get that fixed first, otherwise you will be replacing the convertor again.
