1998 Toyota Corolla Problem Starting the engine

Hi, sometimes when I start the car, I just get a clicking noise; sometimes the first time it starts fine. I have already checked the battery and cable connections to the battery. I noticed if I pump the gas pedal and/or push the gas pedal down while I'm cranking the engine, the engine starts. At least this trick works everytime the first or second try. What can be the problem here?

So your saying that when you start the car the engine won't turn over, it will just click? If so then I would say that you have a starter problem. To veryify just make sure you have battery voltage to the "s" terminal to the starter when the problem occurs and make sure you have battery voltage to the big cable to the starter.

Thanks stevew84. I will check the wires now, but meanwhile, could depressing the gas pedal affect the starter functioning in any way? If it can, then the starter may very well be the issue here.

Short answer is no. You should never have to move the gas pedal to start the vehicle. It has electronic fuel injection.
