Electrical problem
1998 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 120K miles

Had the starter out and checked. Passed 3 times good. Changed the battery (new). Had the system checked at Pep boys. All checked good. Cleaned every conection from batt to starter.

When you turn the key you get a loud snap but does not start.I'm trying to avoid the $65 / hr. To diagnose.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Ed

The loud snap sounds like an electrical arc. The starter wire is too close to the block (which is a ground).

Check the power cable to the starter is not close to block and does not have any open insulation.

Would I be able to see the arc. Lets say at night ( in the dark) if there is one?

Checked the cords and there aren't any cuts visable anywhere

the cord itself from the battery actually has a clamp that holds it against the block !? Then runs over to the starter

You should be able to see it. It could also be a bad relay, or possibly the ign. Switch.

Thanks for all of your help. Turns out the starter is no good. Had it re-checkred again at Kragen this time. So keep in mind that just because it may test good. It may not be good. Installed the new one and it works great.

Thanks again

best regards

Ed
