The engine light came on after driving the car some distantance maybe (20-40 miles). I noticed that the car had a rough idle sound until it starting running for a while then it stop. Now when you try and drive you have to step on the gas pedal hard for it to pick up and start driving.

Have the PCM scanned at any autoparts store for free. You mostlikely have a sensor failure, causing it to run rich. Have it repaired ASAP, a rich condition can cause CAT failure.
