My car makes loud screeching sounds when I first turn on the car, and it lasts about 30 seconds to a minute. What is the problem? Is it the timing belt? I have never had it changed. If it is the timing belt, do I have to change the water pump, too? How much can I expect to pay?

Hi there,

Check the Alternator and power steering belts first, Cam belts don't normally squeal like that. If you have not changed the Cam belt it may be a good thing to consider. You do not have to change the water pump, if it is still serviceable. Have the idler pulleys checked and the cam & crank shaft oil seal inspected as well. As for cost, You best ring around and get a quote as I do not live in USA an I have not currently got access to the relevant data base to advise accordingly.
