driving @ 120kms /hour on highway, radio goes dead, big puff of white smoke comes out of rear of car, the power goes, everything goes dead, cant start, ticking noise, being told alternator gone, but i want to know about the big puff of white smoke, is engine damaged?

It happens sometimes, when you suddenly cut power to a running engine. I wouldn't worry about it. Just have your alternator replaced.
