In trying to install a new thermostat, I am having a problem getting the new unit in. There is a fixed, ring gasket in the block and I cannot force the thermostat into same. Is this gasket removable? How to get the new unit installed and tightened to where it will not leak?

The gasket comes out and slips around the thermostat. The gasket has a slit in the center, so the slit goes on the thermostat. When complete the gasket would be on both sides of the thermostat housing. Make sense?
