I recently replaced the water pump and timing belt.
after the 1st belt shreded, (walked off the pulley into the valve cover) I replaced the timing belt tentioner and naturally the belt. Drove the car for less than 100 miles and again shreded the belt.
any suggestions?

Visually check belt alignment, that is, belt should be straight as you look down at it.

Look for any contamination (oil, coolant) on timing belt.

Look at lower cog on crankshaft for wobble or worn slot where it slides into woodruff key. If woodruff key slot on cog is worn, cog will slide back and forth causing wear.

Check notches on camshaft pulley for missing notches or sharp edges. There is a small thin steel guide that fits on outside of lower cog, make sure it is installed properly. If installed backwards it will cut into belt.

Check above and let me know what you find.

Is this 1.6 or 1.8 engine?
