1995 Toyota Corolla parking brake?

My problem hopefully is a small one. But my car is stuck in park when i press the brake this is usually a sound of a release lever to release so I can put it into drive do not know to much but basics so if you can tell me lamens term that would be great.

Hi there, There is a switch on the brake pedal that activates safety switch on the gear selector, this is so children cant engage the transmission in to drive easily causing an accident. Get this safety lock out checked out have a look at the owners manual there may be an override that will allow you to get it to a work shop to be repaired. I have added some information as well.
