my brake lights wont turn off and half of a small round black plastic thing was found on the floor by the brakes

Sounds like the brake switch is a goner-follow the brake pedal arm till it meets up with the support bracket you'll find it right here.

The black plastic thing is a spacer that fits on the brake pedal. If missing, the brake switch would be out of adjustment.

You can try adjusting the brake switch, to compensate for the loss of the spacer.
