Can the pistons be removed through the bottom oil pan opening, without removing the cylinder head.

You would have to remove the crankshaft, and it would be near impossible to compress the rings to get the piston back in.
Remove head.
You also will need a ridge reamer to clean the ridge at top of cylinder BEFORE removing pistons.
