when the clutch pedal is depressed and a gear is selected the clutch starts to engage even though the pedal remains down, i believe this to be due to damaged seals in either the master cylinder or the slave cylinder, my question is how do i tell which of these is more likely to be the problem?

It would most likely be the MC seal, than slave.

Bleed the system, if there are no leaks, then MC.
