Air Conditioning problem

My air conditioning on my car is just blowing hot air. On some occasions it blows cold air but hten after 5 minutes its starts to blow hot air. My boyfriend who is a licensed mechanic tryied to put the R-134a and when he tried the valve kept telling him warning might have mechanical problems. I wanted to know what can be wrong and how much would it cost me to fix it?
