1993 Toyota Corolla GLI engine is making a knocking noise

Why my engine sounds like shaking a can with stone inside of it. Some says that I will change my gas with higher octane so I change my unleaded gas with 93 octane to premium w/ 95 octane but nothing change. Please help me thanxxx so much!

Remove valve cover and measure shim clearence (cold engine) rotate engine by hand to each firing position and check shim clearence, should be.008 on intake and.010 on exhaust.

Also inspect camshaft lobes for knicks, unusual wear.

Check base timing with timing light and diagnistic pins shorted. Base timing should be 10 degrees BTDC.
