Engine problem
1992 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 132000 miles

PLEASE HELP! 1992 TOYOTA COROLLA-This car had been sitting up for quite a while when i bought it but ran okay at first. Then began cutting off when i stopped. Would crank back up and go but sputters and slow to acclerate as if not getting gas. Eventually it stopped running at all. Ive had fuel pump & filter,& injectors checked-no problems. The gas tank was dirty/rusty but flushed and ran fine for couple of days but again began to lose power, slow to acclerate,s puttering, etc. Now it will crank and idle but will not acclerate. Ive been told everything from i need to replace entire gas tank to it could be some kind of sensor s on fuel rail??? i am a single, struggling mother and know absolutely nothing about cars! can someone PLEASE TELL ME WHAT IS CAUSING THIS?

Do you have a check engine light On or has flashed?

When was the last tune-up?

Get the fuel pressure and exhaust system for restriction checked then comeback

It does need tune up but fuel pressure and exhaust seem okay. Someone told me gas is getting thru fuel rail to injectors but too much is going back and not enough into injectors???? No engine light is on

Did you actually performed the fuel pressure test or just using the eyeball method or the thumb.

I need the fuel pressure readings before I can continue to assist.

If its getting too much fuel could be a problem with the presssure regulator not maintaining the fuel pressure.

Sounds like a fuel pressure issue as mentioned. The fuel pressure regulator is located on the fuel rail on the passengers side, it is small and round and has a vaccum line to the intake manifold and a rubber fuel return line on the bottom of the unit. Pressurize the fuel system (don't start it) and pull the vaccum line and look for gasoline, that would indicate the FPR diaphram is ruptured and the FPR must be replaced. This engine (4AFE) does not have a fuel pressure test port, there is a special fitting that screws into the cold start port on the fuel rail (you have to remove the Cold Start Valve on the rail). This fitting has metric threads on one end and a shraeder valve on the other. You may have to go to Toyota service to get this done, or a garage that specializes in Toyota's. You need to know what the fuel pressure is before you can isolate the problem. In the picture below the FPR is the round "cup" directly behind the #1 cylinder.
