1992 Toyota Corolla Front Wheel Drive Automatic 110000 miles

I took the car to the shop for inspection and they told me that the front brakes and axles are bad.I change the axles and brakes but now in I put the car in a gear it makes a grinding noise.I took it apart and it looks like the axles are spinning in opposite directions. Is this possible and if so how can I fix it?

Hi there,

The wheels turning is opposite directions is normal with both wheels off the ground, this is due to the differential gears in the final drive unit, the noise may be the axles not fully engaged in the splines in the diff, or there is a problem with in the diff it's self, make sure that the drive shafts are correct and fitted fully in, they click in with a "c"clip check this out first.

Also check the differential fluid. The drain/fill plug is on rear of differential, next to firewall.

Toyota uses a seperate fluid supplys for the trans and the differential. The differential is where the CV axles go into. If the differential level is low or out, the differential can sieze.
