The brake petal has to be engaged to move the gear shifter from park to reverse but the button on the gear shifter will not depress to release the gear shifter so it can shift to different positions. Is there a release intergrated to the brake petal

You have a problem within the shift interlock system could be the shiftlock computer or the shift lock solenoid or brake circuit
