Ity has a 16valve DOHC engine that has purred perfectly until a couple days ago.

There is a distinct, loud knock that appears to be towards the left (front) of the motor and sounds to be near the top but below the cams.

It is not a tick or tapping, nor grinding but a fairly loud knock. At idle it is fine, sounds and idles perfectly. A little rev is fine, but revving past about 2500 rpm and the knock starts in and accelrates with the motor.

The oil (dummy) light comes on and flickers under load during the acclerating and knocking, but not consistently.

It has fresh oil, etc -

Any ideas / help much appreciated...

Well theres two things that you could do. Onedrop your oilpan and see what bearing went out an replace it or get another engine block.
